News and Research
Most people know that direct sun exposure on the skin stimulates our bodies to make vitamin D yet are skeptical about other examples of the biologic effects of light. Throughout pre-recorded history humans lived and slept outside in the natural environment. In primitive societies fertility and menstruation in women were cycled by light from the moon and all women had their periods at the same time (and were fertile at the same time). Today many women are so frightened of getting skin cancer from sun exposure they end up deficient in vitamin D. Recently it has been reported that women who don’t eat vitamin D fortified foods, use sun bloc and avoid sunlight to an extreme are delivering babies with Rickets (a bone disease caused by vitamin D deficiency).
Light therapy began in Russia over 300 years ago. People with low back pain were treated with sunlight that was passed through red stained glass before hitting their skin. A moderate level of success was reported.
Over 100 years ago a railroad worker from India named Dinshaw developed a system of passing light from a light bulb through colored filters on to the skin to treat a variety of conditions. Photographs exist showing people with third degree burns making remarkable recoveries after being treated with red light. Some had extensive burns covering more than 50% of the body which was universally fatal in the 1920s.
The next big leap in light therapy was the development of LEDs (light emitting diodes) and low level lasers in the 1960s. Almost immediately it was discovered that either source of light could be used to stimulate an acupuncture point. Infrared and red LED devices were developed for animal use beginning in 1982. These devices were pulsed on and off at “tissue resonance frequencies” of Nogier (Paul Nogier MD of France) that are related to the embryologic origin of tissue. In the 1990s use of similar devices spread to humans in Europe and the US. There are now about five companies in the US and Europe that make LED or laser devices that incorporate the use of Nogier’s frequencies.
The first use of such a device demonstrates how remarkable they can be. In 1982 electrical engineer Danny Parris of Oklahoma asked the father of veterinary acupuncture, Marvin Cain DVM, to test a device containing pulsed infrared LEDs. The first patient was a race horse that returned from a race with an extensive injury to its cornea (front skin of the eye) caused by a flying rock. Marvin aimed the light at the eye for two minutes with the device pulsed on and off at 292 Hz, the frequency indicated for tissue derived from embryologic ectoderm. Two hours later he could see edges of the wound growing in as he watched, something he had never heard of nor seen previously. By the next morning a thin layer of skin covered the entire injury, a stage of healing normally seen in five to seven days. Marvin said the experience “shocked” him and he has since treated corneal injuries in hundreds of animals with similar results. For a list of experiences of veterinarian acupuncturists using LEDs pulsed at Nogier’s frequencies click on “frequencies.”
Our light therapy devices incorporate the best features distilled from the above information. Three of our products (the X-Light, Energy-Balancer, and Red Carpet) are LED (light emitting diode) products, indicated for pain relief, muscle spasms, increasing mobility of painful joints, and the temporary increase of circulation. To discover many ways in which they have been used in animals and humans please read chapter 2 on light therapy in the book Healing Energies of Heat and Light. These types of devices fall under FDA classification (IRT) 890.5740 and became exempt from the 510-K requirement in 1997 because of their safety.
More and more uses of light therapy are being discovered such as the following:
- Healing of skin ulcers that won’t heal normally. Low level lasers are used routinely for this problem in Europe.
- Treatment of jaundice of premature babies with special “bililights” to reduce blood bilirubin to safe levels. This treatment has prevented permanent brain damage in babies for over 50 years.
- Healing of the retina in military pilots whose retinas were damaged by high- powered laser exposure in flight.
- Use in “photodynamic therapy” of cancers where a photosensitizing drug is injected into a vein followed by aiming red light directly at a cancer with an LED or laser.
- A report of “distant healing” of osteomyelitis of the tibia (a bone infection) when the other leg received light therapy for a skin graft.
- A blue wave length (415 nm) helps heal the worst form of acne by killing a specific bacteria by formation of free radicals.
- A specific wavelength of blue light (470 nm) kills the staph bacteria that causes MERSA, the dreaded antibiotic-resistant hospital infection.
- Adequate direct sun exposure to the arms can prevent Rickets in the newborns of women who spend little time out of doors, avoid vitamin D fortified foods, and use sun block excessively.
- Use of red light to heal cuts and bruises that otherwise won’t heal in occupants of submarines and space craft.
- Remarkable reductions in healing time of injuries, burns, surgery, and fractures. Veterinarians supplied us with the following photos of barbed wire injuries in horses that normally take a year or more to heal.

Rodger made his living as an inventor for many years in the area of extrusion plastics. In 1977 he had a bad case of hemorrhoids, sat on a hot radiator and experienced relief. To treat his internal hemorrhoids he made a heated probe out of a 30-30 bullet casing and that helped as well. His biggest obstacle was getting a doctor to try it out. He successfully twisted the arm of an old high school chum who was an obstetrician.
The first patient was a lady who was five months pregnant and had a three inch cluster of hemorrhoids lying down. The probe was inserted and the hemorrhoids shrank 90% in 10 minutes as the doctor and nurse watched in amazement. This led to the formation of a company to manufacture and sell the device.
Two therapeutic trials were required by the FDA and these took place in Japan and Washington State. Results with hemorrhoids were remarkable with 98% of users experiencing some relief and 75% reporting complete relief of symptoms with no side effects. The product was granted a “510-K” by the FDA in 1982 and entered the marketplace cleared for the treatment of hemorrhoids.
Unexpectedly clients in these old studies reported other types of responses. The very first study patient was called to see how his hemorrhoids were doing. He said they were a little better but what impressed him was what happened with his prostate symptoms. He normally got up about at night six times to urinate but following the first use of the device he slept through. This type of response was heard many times in the following years and was hard to explain. The probe was only two inches long, did not come within inches of touching the prostate, and the blood carries off unwanted heat very rapidly.
n 1985 a letter arrived from Beijing, China. Chinese doctors tried the device in many conditions and reported success in treating symptoms of prostate enlargement, prostatitis, anal fissure, and some immune system related problems. By this time it was obvious something else was going on than the application of heat alone.
Additional possible uses of the device followed. A horse trainer purchased a gelding for $8,000 but the horse developed five inch hives all over the body. The poor horse scratched against the corners of buildings 24 hours a day, stopped eating and lost weight rapidly. Standard veterinarian care was of no help so after 30 days the veterinarian recommended putting the horse down. At that point Rodger was asked to help. A foot long anal heater was tooled which was held in the horse’s anus for 40 minutes. The next day the hives were gone and the horse is alive and well 15 years later. We now know of two other horses with giant hives all over the body that responded in a similar fashion (with no known failures).
Rodger started each treatment by giving people a nutritional drink. In the mix were five trace minerals, vitamin C, a flushing dose of niacin, and the five-sided sugar compound d-ribose. Ribose is the most interesting compound of this mix. Ribose is made in the body, RNA is named for it, and it forms the long sides of the “ladder” of the DNA molecule. In Japan cardiologists use ribose to treat early heart failure. Endurance sports events deplete levels of ATP (the “active form” of energy). Several grams of ribose can bring ATP levels back to normal in 24 hours instead of the normal five days.
The niacin flush was used to rapidly and thoroughly circulate the other nutrients. Rodger learned about ribose after his sister was treated by a Greek biochemist for terminal cancer (lymphoma) in 1977 when she was almost dead (weight 85 pounds, couldn’t walk or eat). Following a month of intravenous injections she recovered from death’s door returning to the States to play golf walking a very hilly course for three months. Then she became very ill again, went back to Greece, and had the same rebound again (the Greek told her he could not cure her but her recoveries were amazing).
The idea for using trace minerals came from a biochemist in Spokane that developed a unique approach to healing. Using a “chem. 24” panel of common blood tests he did ratios in his head between different values to evaluate how different chemical pathways were working. He then advised a “metabolic diet” to adjust the pH of the body in the way indicated by the ratios. Some people were advised to eat more animal protein foods while others needed to become more vegetarian (our genetics and chemistry are all different).
An example was Rodger’s step-father who went into severe heart failure at the age of 90. Doctors gave the old man two days to live when he entered the hospital. Hank signed a “Do Not Resuscitate” form saying he “wanted to die only once.” Medicare rules allowed only five days in the hospital with his diagnosis so Rodger took him home when he failed to die on time. The biochemist evaluated his blood tests and recommended a high protein diet of meat, pork, eggs, with reduced fruits and vegetables along with the trace minerals. The old man made a complete recovery, all of his degenerative diseases reversed during the next two months, and he lived another 10 years in good health while maintaining a 150 bowling average.
Unfortunately the biochemist died in 2002 taking his methods with him.
Rodger included use of a sauna because he liked what an infrared sauna felt like on his own energy system. Later he felt any form of sauna would work in his program as long as a good total body sweat was achieved. An infrared sauna was preferred to a steam sauna for reasons of comfort (lower humidity and temperature).
Saunas have been used throughout history in many cultures but scientific studies showing effects on health are lacking. Saunas are believed by many to help clear toxins from the body. However, this seems to occur only in intensive programs that involve taking four to five saunas daily for 20 days during one month. Taking one sauna will mobilize undesirable petrochemical materials from the fat into blood but after that single sauna the chemicals pass back to be stored in the fat. We once saw a video where a lady was sweating out little round black spots of what looked like used motor oil, but it took five days and about 20 saunas to get to that stage. Chemical analysis of the material found it to be a mixture of the same pollutants she was exposed to at work.
Application of the products
Estes treated about 150 people in his home over a period of several years (absorbing all expenses himself). About 140 of these people experienced partial to complete healing. He discovered that as people used more parts of the program together on the same day, results got better and better through an apparent synergistic effect. He started clients with a juice drink containing vitamin C, trace minerals, ribose, and the minimal amount of niacin to produce a “flush.”
After the flush cleared clients took a 30 minute sauna. This was followed by lying under blankets of pulsing LED lights for 30 minutes. People then went home and took a 30 minute anal heater treatment in the privacy of their own home. The intent was to use all four modalities in the same day, in any order.
For preventive purposes or in the case of less serious conditions he recommended doing the program once a week. For more serious conditions he recommended twice per week. For immune system improvement he advised always skipping a day or two between uses of the anal heater to prevent an adaptation response.
Some people used the program to pump up their energy levels. Rodger’s step-father (the same one with the heart failure at age 90) came to him in 1998 (at age 98) saying he was running out of energy and didn’t feel like bowling on the old-folks league that season. Rodger plugged him into his full program twice a week. Two weeks later Hank was full of energy again and went on to bowl in two senior leagues that winter.
